2018 Apple iPhone News, Rumors and Other Mysteries Unleashed! September 10, 2018

apple_event_2018 500

Amid all the questions concerning Apple’s new iPhone(s?) scheduled for unveiling this Wednesday, September 12 (and subsequent pre-order date of September 14), multiple leaks are also springing forth, giving us a better look at the fabled Next Big Thing– as well as answers to a lot of revealed truths… or at the very least, very educated guesses.

Right off the bat, several rumors suggests it’s more than just one phone. Some say two, others three. First on deck, the iPhone XS, a calculated name and dubbed such because Apple has a habit of dropping S’s at the tail ends of their improved models. It would stand to reason then, that the second one, slightly bigger and released at the same time, would be the XS Plus, but such is not the case. Reports tumbling in are calling it the iPhone XS Max. As both the XS and XS Max will probably break the sound barrier of pricing, it makes sense that there’s also talk of a kinder, gentler model, the iPhone 9 (or 11?). Now, the 9 (or 11) won’t exactly be cheap, but compared to the other two, it’ll look like the “responsible choice.”

Anyway, without further ado, here is a breakdown of the three new fabled iPhones and the rumors associated with them.

iPhone_XS 700

iPhone XS

The 5.8” OLED iPhone XS (or, maybe the  X2… the XI—aren’t rumors fun?) base price is estimated at $1,100, about a benjamin more than the X. All photo leaks depict Apple’s new smartphone in a (clandestinely) celebrated new gold, which isn’t such a gotcha surprise ‘cause a gold iPhone X was briefly in the works last year before it was canceled. We’re actually expecting three color options for the iPhone XS: gold, black and white. No surprise there, either.

Sources indicate the XS will be about the same size as the iPhone X, however it may be thicker due to a larger rear camera sensor and lens, so we can expect some camera improvements (more on this later).  Apparently the top and bottom bezels will finally be removed, as has the home button, so the difference of screen size with previous models is a bit “Apple and oranges.” Or, to look at it another way, the 6.5” Max won’t be as monstrous to lug around as you might think

The iPhone XS—as well as the XS Max and 9—are predicted to house A12 chips, upgraded from last year’s A11 Bionic. Apple analysts suggest the XS will probably have faster mobile data speeds and come equipped with a dual-SIM card slot. Lines of code in the forthcoming iOS 12 software update (included with the XS and XS Plus out of the box) conspicuously point to that dual-SIM promise, which means iPhone owners can finally enjoy the benefits of two SIM cards in one phone. It’s also believed the XS may be coming with 4G of RAM and a 2.49GHz chipset (dare to dream). Apple may also be adding to the existing storage sizes, including a 512GB model—bigger than most laptop solid state hard drives! Of course, if it does happen, that unit won’t be going for $1,100.

As for the camera, not a lot’s been learned. There will likely be a dual-lens rear camera on the XS and XS Max, able to shoot 12MP photos, with a telephoto lens and one normal lens, both with optical image stabilization. Also, because of the absence of a Touch ID home button, the front camera will no doubt come with Apple’s TrueDepth feature. Other new technology might be introduced on the cameras, but for the time being, we’ll leave it at that.

Expect a longer battery life with your new iPhones as well. The XS is predicted to be 10% bigger than the X, coming in at 3,000mAh. Charging the phone will be easier, too, as it’s snuck out that Apple will be including a fast charger this time.

iPhone XS Max 700

iPhone XS Max

Larger and brawnier, the 6.5” OLED XS Max has most of the same features as the iPhone X, plus some other tablet-like powers that just might make it easy for you to step it up to Apple’s flagship. For example, there will be some large screen app interfaces usually reserved for the iPad, such as mail and Messages, with more information on the screen, such as threads.

The Max will most likely be priced $100-200 higher than the XS, putting it around $1,200-1,300. Like the XS, it will also be available in gold, black and white.

The Max’s battery will have greater battery life, too. Reports suggest the battery in this phone will be 25% bigger than last year’s iPhone X, sporting up to 3,400mAh. And, like the XS, it will have the dual-SIM card slot.

iPhone 9

While iPhones XS and XS Max reportedly both have OLED screens, the budget-minded 6.1” iPhone 9 is purportedly coming with an LCD screen. It will also feature an aluminum body (the XS and XS Max are stainless steel) and Face ID. The color lineup is still up in the air, though: One report lists gray, white and red, while another predicts pastel yellow, pink and blue. Also, it’s equipped with one rear camera lens to the others’ two, a single SIM card to the others’ duals, 3GB of RAM and a max storage of 256GB. Its demure starting $699 still gets a lot of bang for the buck, though (for example, you still get the A12 chip) and iPhone’s legendary photo-taking skillz). Reports indicate that if you’re holding out for this least expensive 2018 iPhone, you may have to wait a little longer. Due to certain assembly issues, the iPhone 9 is scheduled to come out four weeks later, in October. A small price to pay for a small price.

On a related note, there are also spicy predictions about the new iPad Pro being released this week, including the Lightning connection getting switched out with a USB-C port, and the usual 12-watt power adapter being replaced with an 18-watt. Other rumors about the Apple tablet include, two models– an 11″ and a 12.9″, no Home button, slimmer bezels, rounded corners and a bigger display. There’s also chatter about the headphone jack going away.

Xtra Drive Mini: The Must-Have Gadget For Your iPhone X November 14, 2017

This being the Year of the iPhone and all, with the radical overhaul of upgrades and the new X, it comes as no surprise that the market’s getting deluged with new peripheral stuff, all things Apple. That said, there are a number of worthy accessories being introduced that warrant our rapt attention. One is the wireless phone charger, undoubtedly one of the most impactful “here-to-stay” products associated with the iPhone 8, 8S and X. Another is Hypercel’s mind-blowing, memory-expanding, mobile Naztech Xtra Drive Mini.

Custom-made for the latest iOS devices, including iPads, the Mini is Hypercel’s new thumb-sized, high-speed Micro SD card reader, capable of up to 256GB of extra portable storage. Über-handy and pocket-friendly, this plug-and-play gadget lets Apple owners instantly save, store and transfer photos, videos, music, and data without cloud syncing. It comes with a proprietary app (on the App store, no charge) which greatly simplifies backing up and transferring files, and frees up space on the device.

In practical terms, if you’re a photographer, videographer, designer, DJ, realtor, web developer, student, teacher, wedding planner, food & travel blogger, owner of a cat who plays the piano, or just a regular Joe or Jane who perpetually captures life’s moments, the Mini will quickly become your go-to gadget for storing files.

Able to store up to 72 hours of video, the Mini’s perfect for movie lovers and binge-watchers who want to feed their jones on the road. Shows can be watched directly from the drive without using the Apple device’s own memory. Alternately, the drive can also store up to 170,000 photos or 74,000 songs.

The aluminum-alloy Mini drive only weighs about 8 grams and sports a key ring for natural travel. It’s equipped with a built-in MFi Lightning® connector, standard USB connector, and a memory card slot for easy switching out and trafficking between iOS devices.

The Xtra Drive Mini comes with a 16GB Micro SD card and can be upgraded to as much as 256GB. You can find yours at Fry’s Electronics, on Amazon, or at naztech.com ($59.99 MSRP), backed with a lifetime warranty.

Charge On and Qi-Lax November 9, 2017

qi_nightstand 2

Wireless charging is one of the hottest mobile technology trends in 2017, so it probably bears some discussion as to what that means to you.

If it isn’t clear already, wireless charging (or inductive charging) is a high-tech feature that allows you to charge your phone without plugging in a cable. Or, for the inner nerd, it’s when an alternating current in the charger is sent through a coil to create a magnetic field, and a second coil in the receiver (phone) converts the magnetic field into electricity, which charges the battery.

Although a few different wireless charging technologies have been jockeying for top position, it appears the Qi (pronounced “chee”– from the Chinese word qi, meaning “energy flow”) format is gaining the most favor, especially since Apple opted to make their iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X, all Qi-friendly (after all, when Apple speaks…). This is great news, actually, because it means customers can purchase a third-party charger for their iPhone instead of a costly proprietary one, should they so choose.

If you have a Qi-ready phone, and then get a wireless charger, all it takes is placing the phone on top of the charger and—ala kazaam!—it’s charging– no strings attached. The other cool thing about wireless is, most Qi-enabled phones (phones that don’t come with Qi, but are built so it can be added) can be equipped with a cost-friendly third-party receiver.

When shopping for your next smartphone, it would be wise to look into whether it’s Qi-ready or at least Qi-enabled. Currently, there are only three tablets that have built-in QI charging ability: the Google Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Note 8 (although you can add an external receiver to your tablet if it is not one of these).

According to LXORY, 53 smartphones to-date are now Qi-ready, including the iPhone X. This number will probably change faster than your socks. There are approximately 90 Qi-enabled phones out there as well.

So, bottom line. What do you get out of a wireless charger? Here are some benefits to consider:

  • It’s convenient. No need to plug/unplug, or disconnect to answer a call.
  • Tidier. No dangling wires.
  • No risk of electric shock due to exposed charging cable ends.
  • No mechanical moving parts = less chance of breaking like charging cables are apt to do.
  • Inexpensive. Most charging pads are less than $35.

If you do finally get  locked and loaded with a Qi setup, then you should immediately download the Aircharge locator app, a wireless charging guide with over 4,500 Qi hotspots worldwide (Mickey D’s, yo; Starbucks), including cafes, restaurants, shops, airports, train stations, hotels and gyms. This app is available for iOS, Android and Windows Mobile.

Using a wireless charger is a great option, especially for those who are looking to shed the number of entangled wires in their lives. So, before getting your charger, do these two things first:

  • Check if your phone or tablet is Qi charger-ready.
  • If not, get the receiver that makes it work.

HyperGear currently offers two excellent new chargers for Qi-ready devices, both very reasonably priced:

ufo

  • UFO – Reminiscent of ELO’s “Out of the Blue,” the UFO’s cool, compact flying saucer design houses a cutting-edge wireless charging pad compatible with any Qi-enabled devices. The saucer’s LED charging indicator glows a calming, “nightstand-friendly” blue so it can sit by your bedside without casting an annoying light. MSRP $29.99.

qi_charger

  • Qi Wireless Charging Stand – Unlike wireless pads that only house one coil, HyperGear’s offers three built-in coils which provide a much wider charging area, so you don’t have to sweat placing your phone in precisely one spot every time. Designed for the device to be used while it’s docked, the also-bedside-friendly stand can sit in either portrait or landscape mode, at exactly a 45-degree angle for ideal, hands-free mailbox purging and Breaking Bad binge-watching. MSRP $34.99

It’s a wireless world out there. Isn’t it time to get in touch with your Qi?
